In order to repair or create your own clothing, you have to know how to sew! My sewing skills have so far been self-taught, so I decided to take a college course this summer to learn more about sewing and fashion techniques and hone my skills.
I registered for Fashion 70A: Clothing Construction 1, taught by instructor Emily Melville. In this class we learned basic techniques of sewing clothing like different kinds of stitches, how to use and modify patterns, using a sewing machine, taking measurements, sewing zippers and buttonholes, and more.
The class also had us create two complete garments: a pair of pants and a dress. The course was entirely online and I was able to use my own sewing machine and equipment.
Overall I really feel like I learned a lot and improved my sewing skills. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in creating clothing.
I took this college class in concurrent enrollment with my high school. High school students can take classes at junior colleges with no registration fees.
