Enter Your Recycled Fashion Creations in the 2023 Marin County Fair!

In 2022, I entered one of my recycled fashion creations, a denim handbag made from old jeans, into the Marin County Fair.  I earned a second-place ribbon and, more importantly, heightened community awareness about fashion waste and recycling clothing and textiles. The only drawback is that the fair's exhibits were online only due to the COVID pandemic, and I felt I might not reach as many people as I would in an in-person exhibit.

Since there would probably be in-person exhibits for 2023, I decided to write a proposal for a dedicated recycled fashion category for the 2023 Marin County Fair's competitive exhibits, and I submitted it to them for consideration last fall.

The Marin County Fair has always had an emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility, billing itself as the "Healthiest and Greenest Fair on Earth," so I felt that a category like this was a perfect fit for their exhibits.

They thought it was a great idea, too, and it's now an official class in the Fair's junior Clothing & Textiles sewing division!

If you want to enter your own recycled fashion creation, enter it in the sewing division in the "Clothing Revisited" category. The competition is for youth ages 13 to 18 and you can enter any reconstructed clothing or textile item. the nonrefundable entry fee is $2, and you can enter your creations in the fair online here. Registration is open now and the deadline for entering the Clothing & Textiles division is Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 5 pm. (Note that most other categories have a deadline of Monday, June 5.)

The 2023 Marin County Fair takes place June 30–July 4 at the Marin County Fairgrounds in San Rafael. This year's theme is "Electrifying!" Learn more at www.fair.marincounty.org/2023.
